Take any group of 100 people at the start of their working career and follow them for 40 years until they reach retirement age and here’s what you’ll find:
- Only 1 will be wealthy.
- 4 will be financially secure.
- 5 will continue working, not because they want to but because they have to.
- 36 will have died.
- 54 will be dead broke – dependent on the meagre Social Security checks, relatives, friends and even charity for a minimum standard of living.
Financially speaking that’s 5% successful, 95% unsuccessful. This is a world-wide occurrence; however in South Africa, as a developing country, it poses a huge challenge because of our high unemployment. According to the International Labour Organisation, South Africa is the 8th highest unemployment country in the world and will slip to 6th highest by 2020.
It is the responsibility of every South African to do whatever possible to be one of those who can retire at retirement age. In this respect BBN has developed the SILT – Smart Impact Leadership Training programme that supports the BBN 5-Star Community Challenge so that all community stakeholders can become part of a definite solution, one that embraces the future as opportunities and prepares our people to take action TODAY!! This means growing your leadership ability, one in which you take responsibility for your future and not depend on others. It also means becoming future smart and future ready at the micro (me and my family) and/or the macro (my community and my country) level. The challenges facing South Africa, together with that of our planet compels us to become prepared and resourceful at a much quicker pace. Those who take personal responsibility impact their own lives first and then go on to impact the lives of others with solution-focused practical plans developed by business.
